Despite the ongoing pandemic, over 117 million tourists visited France in 2020, ranking 1st in the world for overall visitors. Paris is, of course, the main focus for most visitors. And for a good reason!
There's so much to see and do, from admiring the amazing architecture to indulging in delicious French cuisine. If you're planning a trip to Paris, be sure to familiarize yourself with the city's taxi system before you arrive.
When you're in a new city, one of the most important things to know is how to get around. Paris is no exception, and taxi cabs are a popular way to get around.
Arriving in Paris: CDG or ORY
First thing first, it’s important to figure out how you will arrive in Paris. If you’re arriving by plane, you have two choices: Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY). Both are large, busy airports with a lot to offer passengers. So which one should you choose?
If you're looking for convenience, CDG is the clear winner. It's located just northeast of the city, so it's closer to the main attractions. This means that if you’re booking a taxi in Paris, you’ll have more choices as it’s a more popular arrival for most tourists.
Orly, on the other hand, is located southwest of the city center and can be more difficult to get to. However, it's usually less crowded than CDG, so you may find the experience of arriving in Paris more relaxed.
And, arriving at Orly means that you will enjoy a cheaper taxi ride into Paris. Taxi fares from Parisian airports are fixed.
Currently, if you’re traveling to the city center from the Orly airport, the fixed fee is 37€ for trips to the Right Bank of the Seine River. They’re 32€ for trips to the Left Bank of the river.
What are the fixed prices for a taxi from Charles de Gaulle to the city center of Paris? The fixed fee is 53€ for trips to the Right Bank of the Seine River. They’re 58€ for trips to the Left Bank of the river.
Where Are Taxi Stations Located at the Paris Airports?
Paris airports have taxi stations located outside of the terminal buildings. These are typically waiting areas with a designated taxi stand. When you arrive at the baggage claim area, you’ll simply want to look for the signs that say “taxis” and follow those.
There may be a queue for taxis, so it is important to know your terminal number when you are ready to leave the airport.
If you’re arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport, there are three taxi stations located outside terminals 1, 2A, and 2C/2D.
If you are arriving at Orly Airport, there is one taxi station located outside of Terminal South.
Do you need a taxi when arriving at one of those airports? Not necessarily a taxi, no. But to get to Paris from any of the airports, you will need to take a taxi or public transportation. Be prepared to book a shuttle in Paris or take the train or metro to your hotel.
How Much Do Taxis Cost in Paris?
As mentioned above, the cost of a taxi ride from the Charles de Gaulle Airport or the Orly Airport isn’t average at all; they’re fixed fees!
For trips to Paris from Orly, expect to pay between 32-37€. For trips to Paris from Charles de Gaulle, expect to pay between 53-58€.
What about the cost of a taxi when you’re out and about in Paris after your arrival? The cost of a taxi in Paris depends on a number of factors, including the distance you are traveling and the time of day.
However, the average cost of a taxi ride in Paris is about 13€. This means that you can expect to pay about $15 USD for a taxi ride in Paris. Of course, this is just an estimate, and the actual cost of your taxi ride may be more or less depending on the factors mentioned above.
Taxi fares are regulated in Paris, though, so be sure to stay up to date on that base fare so you know you’re not being overcharged.
What’s the current cost of a taxi in Paris? The base fee is 7.10€ and the price per kilometer driven is 1.07€ for the first seven kilometers. If your ride is longer than seven kilometers, it is 1.65€ per kilometer after that.
Nighttime fees do apply. However, the base rate stays the same. At night, expect to pay 1.35€ per kilometer.
How to Hail a Cab in Paris
Honestly, in 2022, the easiest way to “hail” a cab in Paris is to pre-book a taxi via the company’s mobile app or by calling the booking number. It’s super easy to book a taxi in Paris these days.
However, if you’re on the street and need a cab in Paris quickly, it’s best to first go to a main road or square and find where the taxis are parked. What you’re looking for is a taxi with a bright roof light (it should be white or green). The dim lights mean the taxi is occupied.
Once you’ve hailed the cab, it’s best if you have the exact address of your destination written down so the taxi driver can put it into their navigation system.
If you don’t speak French, it is helpful to have the address translated into French or even better to have the name and address of your destination written down on a piece of paper.
Be aware that some taxi drivers will try to overcharge you if they think you are a tourist, so always agree on a price before getting into the taxi. Let me know that you’re aware of the base fees mentioned above and that you understand what other taxis charge in the city.
Ultimately, this is why we suggest pre-booking a taxi in Paris. When you pre-book, you know exactly what the ride will cost and can rest assured you won’t be overcharged.
Taxi rank in Paris
There are taxi stations in town however there aren’t always taxis available especially during peak hours. You can try hailing a taxi in the street only if you are at least 50 meters away from the nearest taxi station otherwise the taxi cab won’t stop.
Call/order a radio taxi in Paris
For an immediate ride you can always call a taxi phone in Paris to try and get a cab ASAP. While it’s quick and easy, you won’t know how much you’re charged until you get to your final destination. The price is set by the taxi meter and might include some approach fee.
Taxi Etiquette in Paris
Taxi etiquette in Paris is relatively simple. When hailed, a taxi will usually stop. Save time and only hail Parisian taxi cabs that have the “available” roof sign on. As mentioned above, this white or green sign will be lit up if the cab is available.
When entering a taxi, it’s definitely polite to greet the driver. Greetings such as "Bonjour Monsieur/Madame" or "Bonsoir Monsieur/Madame" are appropriate. It’s also polite to have your destination address on hand immediately.
This saves the taxi driver time and allows them to immediately start the journey or input it into their navigation system so that you can be on your way quickly!
When exiting a taxi, it’s again polite to greet the driver. A "Merci Monsieur/Madame" followed by a "Au revoir Monsieur/Madame" are both appropriate greetings when leaving a taxi in Paris.
Avoid eating or drinking when riding in a Paris taxi. And follow other simple etiquette rules such as speaking at a normal volume and being respectful of the taxi driver’s space.
Should you tip your taxi driver in Paris? That’s a great question! It’s not mandatory, nor is it expected. However, it is somewhat customary these days. A 1-2€ tip on a short trip is a nice gesture.
What about payment? If you’ve pre-booked your taxi in Paris then you were likely able to pay online and won’t have to worry about having cash on hand.
If you hailed a taxi on the street then you’ll want to ensure you have cash on hand to pay the driver. Some taxis in Paris do accept credit cards these days. However, in the case that you enter a taxi that doesn’t accept cards, it’s best to have cash on hand to pay with.
Taxi Safety in Paris
Are taxis safe in Paris? Yes, absolutely! This is especially true if you pre-book ahead of time.
When you learn how to book a taxi in Paris ahead of time, you’re able to confirm with a trusted company like monTransport who your driver will be, what the license plate is, and how much the trip will cost.
However, if you need a cab quickly and have to hail a taxi on the street in Paris, it’s important to take precautions when hailing a cab. This is the case for hailing a cab in pretty much any city in the world, though.
If possible, always hail a taxi from a designated stand, and make sure that the driver is wearing a visible ID badge. In addition, try to avoid taking a taxi late at night or in isolated areas.
Likewise, it’s always helpful to know your route before getting in the taxi. This way you can keep an eye on the meter and make sure the driver is taking you the right way. And, trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, don't get in the car.
By following these simple guidelines, you can help to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience when riding in taxis in Paris.

Does Uber exist in Paris? Yep! What about Bolt and Freenow? Yes, Paris has all of those mobile apps for taxis.
